The first words Melanie spoke when her client advocate entered the room were, “I want an abortion.”

It was clear from the solemn look on her face that she felt “the weight of the world on her shoulders.”

Across the hallway, her five-month-old son sat quietly in his father’s lap while Melanie and her client advocate discussed the new baby’s fate.

It wasn’t long before the many layers of Melanie’s story began to unfold.

She was a new mom – a first-time mom at that.

Her son being only five months old, she couldn’t believe it was even “possible” she was pregnant again.

Even though she had the support of the father of the baby, as well as his parents’, Melanie was overwhelmed, sleep deprived, and “unable to see any other way out than to abort this new child.”

Thus her internet search for abortion information – which, thankfully, triggered Heroic Media’s OAASYS Emergency Response ad, instantly connecting her to one of OAASYS’s Pregnancy Help Center partners in Dallas, Texas.

Melanie was working part-time while her boyfriend worked full-time, and they were currently living with his parents.

Every penny they made went to the support of their new baby, their bills, and to savings to eventually be able to live on their own.

Melanie had a sleepless baby already and couldn’t imagine starting the newborn phase over again so soon.

She also feared another new baby so quickly would spoil their plans and ensure they’d live in her boyfriend’s parents’ spare room “forever.”

As she continued to share, there was still “more to the story.”

Melanie confided that she had a history of depression.

She feared that she would spiral due to the added financial burden since she was already feeling overwhelmed and exhausted.

Yet, once she voiced all of her fears, her client advocate was able to begin addressing the real underlying issues and offer hope.

They discussed the free counseling and parenting support that was available through the pregnancy center to help her.

For the first time in a long while, Melanie felt hopeful.

She looked up from the floor with a faint smile on her face and said, “Well, I always wanted a girl…”

From that moment on, the conversation shifted to talk of possibilities.

Melanie was then encouraged to have the father of the baby along with their five-month-old son in the ultrasound room with her.

She agreed.

Everyone went into the room together and it became very quiet.

Their son in his arms, her boyfriend came to stand by Melanie’s side as their new baby appeared on the screen.

As the sound of a strong heartbeat filled the room, Melanie exclaimed to her boyfriend, “This all just got real!” – which made them both laugh.

Almost in unison, Melanie and the baby’s father proclaimed, “We’re keeping it!”

 The tide had turned.

The parents had accepted their new addition, and the discussion was now upbeat.

The couple left the center, encouraged and hopeful about the future with the new addition to their family.
