It is no secret that the majority of major news outlets are editorially in favor of abortion. However, even the most staunch pro-abortion media executives and personalities had to cringe when Bill Maher stated his position on his HBO show that aired on April 12th. Maher, a veteran comedian and political commentator, has always leaned left of center on a variety of issues, including abortion.

But his comments on the most recent episode of his show indicate not only Maher’s frighteningly honest take on abortion, but perhaps the underlying opinion of the abortion industry as a whole.

Maher actually begins with a compliment to the pro-life movement when he states “ I can respect the absolutist position, I really can.” The consistent messaging from the pro-life community over decades rings true, even to a die-hard like Maher. It is impossible to deny the internal coherence of the pro-life position. If life begins at conception, and murder is wrong, then ending life in the womb is wrong.

Maher’s next comments are both disturbing and enlightening. Continuing to talk about the pro-life movement, he says “They think it’s murder. And it kind of is. I’m just okay with that.” In order for the pro-abortion stance to maintain the same internal coherence that the pro-life stance does, this is the opinion that one has to hold. Life begins at conception, abortion ends life in the womb, and ending innocent life is okay.

We are not here to gawk at Maher’s comments, or even to place ourselves above him. The pro-life community should take high-profile statements like this and think about them strategically. There is an opportunity here for pro-life organizations to stand up and say “We value life at all stages.”

Heroic Media’s mission is to brand pro-life resources to abortion determined women. At times, that mission can feel like a David against Goliath situation. But comments like these from the establishment media reveal a chink in the armor. As more and more abortion advocates admit the reality of what they are doing, the pro-life brand becomes more and more attractive to the average, well adjusted American.

If pro-abortion media personalities want to continue to admit that they take no issue with murder, that should be fine with the pro-life movement. We can remain and continue to be a collection of organizations that advocate for women by providing them with emotional and financial resources, and encouraging them to achieve greatness.
