“Mom, where did this white stick in the bathroom come from?”
Marie’s daughter stumbled across her Mom’s positive pregnancy test while getting ready for school one morning.
Marie didn’t plan on sharing the news of her unexpected pregnancy with her daughter or son… because she was planning to get an abortion as soon as possible.
But when questioned, she stumbled and explained the news that she was pregnant to her children.
They were ecstatic!
They couldn’t wait to welcome a new sibling into the world!!
Suddenly, Marie’s plans to get an abortion became “infinitely more complicated” – but she still felt abortion was her “only option.”
Marie had grown up in the foster care system.
She was determined to give her kids everything she felt she’d never had, but as a single mom, she was already struggling to make ends meet and provide for her kids.
Another mouth to feed and body to clothe seemed impossible.
To add to her stress, the father of the baby expressed no interest in parenting the baby; in fact, he went out of his way to encourage Marie to get an abortion.
She began looking for an abortion facility online.

Once on the phone with the client advocate, Marie shared her hesitations and pressures.
She explained that her “gut instinct” was to parent the baby – but every adult in her life was assuring her that “abortion was the only ‘right choice’ for her.”
She was struggling to reconcile this with the excitement of her own children and their hope of gaining another sibling.
Marie eventually made an appointment to come in for an evaluation and ultrasound.
She went to the appointment alone because she didn’t want anyone to influence her toward choosing the abortion, but wanted to explore all of her options and decide for herself if abortion was truly “the only ‘right choice’”.
After listening to all of her options, though still feeling internal conflict, Marie told her client advocates while preparing for the ultrasound that she felt she “would instantly regret it” if she got an abortion.
It was abundantly clear to her advocates that Marie just needed a little emotional support to help her see that she had the freedom to choose life for her baby.
That’s when the ultrasound pulled up a picture of the tiniest little baby.
Marie was shocked to see that at just six weeks, baby had a heartbeat!
She left the appointment still undecided, but hopeful.
Upon following up, the center advocates learned that Marie had indeed decided to parent her baby!
Her older children were overjoyed by the news!
To everyone’s surprise, even the father of the baby changed his tune and was now supporting Marie’s decision.
Marie and her partner enrolled in the pregnancy center’s Parenting Prep program which provides continuing education and material support for parents.
